MailSprout
Sproutwick Post & Garden

Plant an email. Grow a list you actually own.

MailSprout is a full email marketing platform you can run on your own server. Your contacts live in your database. Your mail goes out through the sending service you pick, at whatever that service charges you.

Sends through Amazon SES, SendGrid, Mailgun, SparkPost, Elastic Email, Blastengine, Gmail or any SMTP server you already have.

Burdock the hedgehog, in a green postal cap, plants sealed envelopes in a raised bed. Older envelopes have sprouted into leafy plants and bees carry letters toward a village.

No fee per contact. Grow the list as big as your server can hold.

Why you need it

A note from the head gardener

Dear marketer,

Most email tools charge you rent on your own list. More people sign up, the bill goes up, even if you only write to them once a month. You get punished for growing.

MailSprout flips that. You install it on a server you control, plug in a sending service, and pay that service for the mail you send. MailSprout itself doesn't count your contacts and send you an invoice for them.

Export your lists to CSV whenever you like. If you ever want to leave, take everyone with you. We have a walled garden here, but it's for vegetables.

Yours in good soil,
Burdock, head gardener

The garden map

Every corner of Sproutwick does a job.

Tap a marker to see what grows there. Each spot is a real part of the app, with the real names you'll see on screen.

A campaign's year

Sow, bloom, harvest, plan.

Every campaign in MailSprout goes through the same four seasons. Pick one to see what you actually do in the app.

The seed shed

Templates come in packets.

These are the starter layouts that ship with the app. Flip a packet to read the back. Every one opens in the drag and drop builder, and you can save your own designs as new packets.

    Automations

Grow a vine. It waters itself.

An automation is a vine: one root (the trigger) and as many leaves (steps) as you need. Try building one. The triggers and steps below are the real ones in MailSprout's automation builder.

    2. Add leaves (steps)

You choose who carries the mail.

MailSprout doesn't lock you to one delivery company. Connect a sending server, or several, and switch when the prices or the results change.

      Meet the neighbours.

Some help. Some don't. All of them are in the app, one way or another.

Hosted tools are good at plenty. This is where they differ from owning the garden.

Move the sliders. Trees appear as your list grows. Put in your sending provider's price per 1,000 emails to see a sending estimate. We left it blank on purpose, because we won't guess your provider's price.

Look this up on your provider's pricing page. Currency is whatever you type.

      The almanac

Questions people ask over the fence.

No. 1Do I need my own server?

For a self-hosted install, yes: a PHP and MySQL server with cron. If you'd rather not, rent a plot on mailsprout.uk and we look after the server.

      No. 2Which sending services work?

Amazon SES, SendGrid, Mailgun, SparkPost, Elastic Email and Blastengine (each by API or SMTP), Gmail, any SMTP server, or the server's own sendmail.

No. 3Will my mail reach the inbox?

Nobody can promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. MailSprout gives you the tools that help: SPF and DKIM checks on sending domains, custom tracking domains, bounce and complaint handling, email verification and server warmup.

No. 4Can I bring my list from another tool?

Yes. Export a CSV from your old tool and import it into a list. Custom fields map across during import.

      No. 5Can I leave?

Yes. Export any list to CSV. On your own install the data is already in your database, so there's nothing to ask for.

No. 6Can I sell email marketing to my own clients?

That's what the admin side is for. Create customer accounts and plans with quotas and sending credits, take payments through a payment gateway, and send invoices.

      No. 7Is there an API?

Yes. There's a REST API for lists, subscribers, campaigns, automations and customer accounts. Automations can be triggered by an API call, and webhooks can post events back to your systems.

No. 8Does it speak my language?

The app ships with translations for English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Czech, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese, and you can edit them in the admin area.

      The ground's soft. Plant something.

Start with one list, one form and one welcome email. Add vines when you're ready. The garden grows at your pace.
